George STOKES was born in Kinoulton, Nottinghamshire, registered Bingham Q1-1891 7B:451. He was the son of John and Ellen STOKES (née PERKINS) of Kinoulton.
They married in 1885.

Aged 0, living in Kinoulton with his father John STOKES, [31] a farm labourer born in Kintoulton; mother Ellen [30] born Great Ponton, Lincoln; brother Henry [4] born Kinoulton and sister Mary H [2] born Kinoulton, and John W PERKINS [10] born Great Ponton and recorded as son in law of John Stokes. 1901 census... Aged 10, George was still in Kinoulton with his parents, brother Henry and sister Mary and a new brother, Frank [5] born in Owthorpe, Notts. (Owthorpe is the next village to Kinoulton) 1911 census...Aged 21,he was a farm labourer, living with farmer William Starbuck at Horninghold, Uppingham. His parents and brother Frank were still in Kinoulton. He married Bertha MAYES [27-10-1892] of Hockwold, later in 1914, their son George Frederick Chappel was born 18-5-1915. Bertha re married in 1918 in Aston, Warks, to Alfred T. HUDSON. Brother Frank was killed in France on 12th March 1915 with the Sherwood Foresters. Their parents were living later at Upper Broughton, Melton Mowbray. |
| He enlisted in Leicester. He served from 9th September 1915 in Gallipoli, and the 5th Dorsets then went on to arrive in Marseille on 9th July 1916. They took part in the successful attack on Poelcapelle 4 /10/1917 which is presumably where George was wounded, dying at the CCS at Dozinghem. 4th, 47th and 61st Casualty Clearing Stations were stationed at Dozinghem. George's Army records have not been found. |
